Overhead Cranes

Heavy Duty Retrieval

Saving Valuable Space

Overhead cranes can greatly enhance material handling efficiency by quickly and accurately moving heavy loads, particularly in vertical lifting applications. This makes them ideal for tasks that involve lifting materials to various heights and positions. By utilizing overhead space, these cranes maximize floor area, allowing for more efficient use of the facility.

While overhead cranes offer numerous advantages, they do require a higher initial investment and installation costs compared to other material handling solutions.

When selecting an overhead crane, it is important to consider the rated load capacity, span, height, work duty, total square footage, speed, suitable bridge and trolley types, control mode, and lifting attachments. There are various styles of overhead cranes available; therefore, it’s essential to evaluate the options and choose the one that best integrates with your operating procedures.

  • Single Girder Crane: This type consists of one bridge girder and two end trucks. It is suitable for light-duty and moderate service, offering reduced costs along with faster and simplified installation. These cranes provide convenient and safe operation
  • Double Girder Crane: This configuration includes two bridge girders and two end trucks, making it ideal for heavy-duty applications. Double girder cranes are more efficient and durable compared to single girder overhead cranes
  • Top Running Crane: This is the most commonly used crane system. It can lift several hundred tons and features a larger span and higher lifting height
  • Underhung Crane: This crane is suspended from the building’s ceiling or roof structure, allowing for excellent side approaches and maximum utilization of the building’s width and height.

Efficiency and safety are the primary reasons for implementing overhead cranes. They can perform operations in a fraction of the time required by other types of equipment and can lift and move heavier loads than floor- or ground-based machines. Additionally, they help to remove materials from hazardous environments that may involve heated metals, chemicals, or toxic substances, minimizing risks to personnel.

When selecting and implementing overhead cranes, it is essential to consider safety measures as a significant factor.

  • Ensuring all operators are trained and qualified to operate the crane safely
  • Conducting daily safety inspections to check for issues that could compromise the operation of the crane
  • Designate one person to call the lift and establish universal signals to ensure clear communication during crane operation
  • Plan the job site to allow space for emergency vehicles and avoid working near any power lines
