Line Striping

Clearly Defined Areas

Increased Visibility

Line striping in material handling is essential for creating visual separation, playing a critical role in ensuring both warehouse safety and optimizing efficiency. It maximizes storage space while marking pedestrian traffic areas, aisles, bulk storage zones, potential hazards, and traffic zones. This clear designation guarantees safe and efficient operations. Additionally, line striping indicates allowed machine widths, ensuring safe and damage-free travel for forklifts and other equipment. Regular inspections and maintenance are essential to ensure the lines remain visible and functional. The width of the lines should be at least 2 inches to ensure maximum visibility and compliance with OSHA safety standards.

While yellow is generally a standard color in line striping, different colors and patterns are often used and can mean different things:

  • Orange Lines: Used to mark inspection areas
  • Red Lines: Indicates defect, scrap, rework, and red tag
  • Red & White Striped Lines: Marks areas that need to be kept clear at all times for safety, such as eye wash stations or firefighting equipment or electrical panels
  • Black & White Striped Lines: Indicates areas that need to be kept clear at all times for operational purposes
  • Black & Yellow Striped Lines: Denotes areas that could expose employees to special physical or health hazards.

There are several options for line striping materials, including thermoplastic, epoxy, and water-based paints. Thermoplastic is the most commonly used type due to its durability and flexibility, with a lifespan of up to five years. Epoxy is more suitable for industrial applications, especially in high-traffic areas like warehouses, where it can last for about three years. Water-based paints are a budget-friendly choice that can also last up to five years; they are easy to apply and appropriate for both interior and exterior use. Additionally, non-skid paints are used in areas with high foot traffic and the potential for spills to prevent slips and falls. These paints create a textured surface that provides excellent grip, enhancing safety in busy environments.

  • Thermoplastic: A combination of thermoplastics and glass beads are applied to asphalt or concrete surfaces to form lines. For specific uses it can create highly reflective lines for extra visibility
  • Epoxy: Made up of resin and minerals, epoxy striping is designed for high-traffic areas with heavy vehicles
  • Waterbased: Made up of water-based acrylic paints, it is suitable for both interior and exterior applications
